Integrity Over Profit
Social Responsibility
Hi.
My name is Jamon.
I’m the founder of Business Atoms and I'm passionate about social responsibility.
An inadequate culture of greed
In the 1980’s a culture of greed in business was kicked off. This was cultivated and glorified as “The American Dream”. In the early part of this century we began to culturally reap what we had sown, and we began to realize that this new perverted and twisted version of “The American Dream” was turning out to be much more of a nightmare than a fantasy dreamland. We have been paying through the nose for our misguided aspirations for the past decade and, as I write this in 2010, the end of that payment is not in sight.
Those who are unethical will always defend themselves by saying that what they are doing is legal. However, that way of thinking is part of what I consider to be a dying culture of greed. Enron, Tyco, and WorldCom ripped back the curtain and revealed this greediness to be wholly inadequate for cultural or individual happiness. Our culture of greed has been slowly dying ever since that cultural implosion at the turn of this century. My belief is that the next natural progression in our cultural evolution is from our current culture of greed to a culture of social responsibility.
The argument for social responsibility
A very good argument can be made that, just as we have a responsibility to take care of our parents when they are too old or disabled to care for themselves, we also have a responsibility to act ethically in relation to the society that supports us and allows for us to have everything we have. Additionally, whereas a culture of greed perpetuates the childish notion that money, possessions, and hedonistic fulfillment can lead to happiness, a culture of social responsibility encompasses a much more mature and comprehensive outlook on human happiness. In a culture of social responsibility, money, possessions and hedonistic fulfillment are a part of the equation. But doing the right thing is more important, and when the two outlooks clash, ethical action always wins.
